HMH is performing a critical role in one of the largest single public infrastructure projects ever constructed in Santa Clara County, VTA’s BART Silicon Valley Phase (I & II) Extension project. For Phase II, HMH is providing multiple services which include survey control, right-of-way engineering, civil roadways, station layouts, utility design and third party utility coordination.
Since the Major Investment Study conducted in 2001 which identified the need for transit alternatives, VTA in cooperation with BART, has been laying the foundations in expanding BART service throughout Santa Clara County so as to meet the ever growing transportation demands of Silicon Valley. With Phase I service planned to open at the end of 2019, the Phase II environmental process has been completed and is currently in the design and engineering phase.
The goal of the BART Silicon Valley Phase II extension, is to include 4 stations (Alum Rock/28th Street Station, Downtown San Jose Station, Diridon Station, and Santa Clara Station). The project will cover six miles, include a five mile tunnel, and general and maintenance facilities. Of the 4 stations being built, Alum Rock/28th Street, Downtown San Jose, and Diridon are underground while Santa Clara Station will be ground-level. The additional features of the stations include passenger drop-off areas, shuttle drop-off areas, bicycle storage facilities, parking facilities, proposed transit-oriented joint development, and intermodal transit connections.
When the project is fully completed, over 1.7 million county residents will be able to see the benefits of improved multi-modal mobility and accessibility, healthier communities, reduced vehicle usage and less greenhouse gases, and an increased transit service to help residents travel from the South Bay to the rest of the Bay Area.
